Let's overcome overwhelm together.
I’m Fiona Sinclair, Holistic Nutritionist, founder of Root to Health, and creator of the Mind Body Reconnect program.
I work with women who are feeling tired, stressed, and overwhelmed.
I help them to move from survival mode to thrive mode—from feeling overloaded, irritable, and exhausted, to feeling more calm, energized, and focused.
I teach them about the mind-body connection using a holistic, science-based approach. Together we learn how our mental health and overall wellness can be directly impacted by the health of our digestive system, the specific foods we eat, and the lifestyle choices we make.
Since becoming a nutritionist, it’s been my mission to empower women to implement dietary and lifestyle changes that have a powerful, positive impact on their mental health—so they can live a happier, healthier life.
As a business owner and mummy of two young kiddos, I know what it’s like to juggle multiple roles—to try to find balance (does it even exist?) between your relationship, your career, and your kids. To somehow find the time to clean your house, walk your dog, make healthy food, work out, have some resemblance of a social life…and maybe even take a long, hot, uninterrupted shower once and awhile. This whole adulting thing is damn hard sometimes.
So if you frequently feel anxious or stressed, know that it’s ok—and that you’re not alone.
I wasn’t always a farmers-market-loving, whole-foods-eating girl.
In my twenties I was like many university students, living off of bagels, pasta, and pizza. My digestion was terrible, I had no energy, I couldn’t focus, and I was experiencing anxiety and panic attacks.
I was prescribed anti-anxiety medication, which helped for awhile—but I couldn’t help feeling that it wasn’t a long term solution to my problem.
I wanted to understand why I felt the way I did. What was the underlying root cause? What could I do to change it?
My inner researcher took control. #nerdalert
I read countless books, articles, and studies—anything I could get my hands on. I completed a Specialized Honours BA in Health Sciences at York University in Toronto, and took additional courses in psychology, cellular biology, neurophysiology, and more. I enrolled in the Applied Holistic Nutrition program at IHN to become a Certified Holistic Nutritionist, and deepen my understanding of the role nutrition plays in our mental health.
Then I began to experiment.
I made positive lifestyle changes, like incorporating yoga and meditation into my weekly routine. I started taking specific nutrients and herbs to support gut health, brain function, and stress reduction. I cut gluten, sugar, and processed foods from my diet, and replaced them with simple, nourishing whole foods.
My anxiety and stress began to decline, my digestion improved, I was sleeping better, and I had more steady energy and mood throughout the day. I became an advocate for my own health.
Did I do this all overnight? Heck no. Do I still have moments where I feel stressed and overwhelmed? Sure I do. #momlife
But now I’m aware of my biggest triggers, and I know how to support my brain and my body with nourishing foods and nutrients to help me manage daily stressors. I have an inventory of tools, tactics, and coping mechanisms to help me get through challenging times, and I continue to learn and grow every day.
My passion and purpose is to help women improve their mental health—to bridge the gap in care that many experience in this area—by providing them with knowledge, inspiration, and support from a nutrition and lifestyle perspective.
When I’m not nerding-out on the latest nutrition research, working with amazing clients, or doing health talks around the city, you’ll find me hanging out with my two kiddos and my hubs.
Other things I love:
Horses – I started riding competitively when I was 6 years old. I’ve taken a break for the past couple years to focus on my family, but I can’t wait to get back in the saddle!
Our garage gym – Since discovering the stress-reliving benefits of weightlifting, me and my hubs have been hooked! We even converted our garage into a home gym. I may only be five feet tall (ok I’m 4’11”), but I’m on a mission: GET STRONG AF.
Travel – My bucket list is looong, but so far I’ve been to New York, London, Paris, Rome, Athens, Edinburgh, and some incredible places in between. This past summer I finally experienced the beautiful Canadian Rocky Mountains—and let me tell you, friend, you need to go at least once in your lifetime. #ProudCanadian
